Exegesis Guide

The list below are names of recommended Bible commentaries series for exegetical courses at LTS.  Let library staff know if a commentary you need is not available online. Circulating copies can be mailed or an appropriate portion scanned and emailed to you.

When searching for commentaries in the catalog, remember to use different terms in your search strings.  For example, a search string might be Bible Commentary Luke, or, Bible Interpretation Luke, or, the name of the series and the name of the book of the Bible, Sacra Pagina Luke. If you are not satisfied with your search result, use the 24/7 Chat box in the catalog to get help with your search or contact your library staff.

  4. Black’s New Testament Commentary Series by Hendrickson Publishers.
  5. Harper’s New Testament Commentary Series by Harper & Row Publishers.
  6. Word Biblical Commentary Series by Word Books Publisher.
  7. The New Testament Library (NTL) Series by Westminster John Knox Press.
  8. Sacra Pagina Series by Liturgical Press.
  9. Paideia Commentary on the New Testament (PCNT) by Baker Academic.
  10. The Anchor Bible Commentary Series by Doubleday.
  11. Abingdon New Testament Commentaries (ANTC) Series by Abingdon Press.  Accessible in online catalog via Ministry Matters.
  12. Trinity Press International (TPI) New Testament Commentary Series.
  13. Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary Series by Smyth & Helwys Publising Inc. This series can be technical and somewhat difficult to read.
  14. Hermeneia–A Critical and Historical Commentary on the Bible Series by Fortress Press.  This series is technical and can be difficult to read.
  15. The New International Greek Testament Commentary Series by William B. Eerdmans Pub. This series is difficult to read due to the use of Biblical Greek.
  16. The International Critical Commentary (ICC) on the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments by T & T Clark Limited. Available at The DTL. This series is difficult to read due to use of Biblical Greek. 
  17. Most socio-rhetorical, literary and theological commentaries of individual books of the Bible published by an academic press.

Peer-reviewed articles are available full-text in the catalog when you search for your selected Scripture passage such as Luke 1:26-38.
