Competency exercises are required midway through the Master of Divinity (MDiv) and Master of Theological Studies (MTS) degrees. The purpose of a competency exercise is to give the student an opportunity to integrate two (MDiv) or two to three (MTS) subject areas in a way that exhibits a basic level of competence in those subject areas. In the MDiv program the competency exercises focus on an event or series of events that display a coherent pastoral practice or set of practices. A competency exercise in the MTS program may have the same focus or a more academic focus depending on the particular subject areas being integrated.
