Youth Ministry Panel Discussion

OF COURSE, YOUTH MINISTRY – BUT HOW?

Join us for a Zoom conversation about building and sustaining a relevant Youth Ministry in your congregation.

Three experts will share their experiences of the challenges and the joys of youth ministry and share what we can do to better support youth programming throughout the church. After the presentations, there will be a 20-minute Q&A session. Participants will then break into small groups with the task of designing a sustainable youth program.

PRESENTERS

Rev. Dr. Christal Williams A native of Cleveland, OH, Christal graduated from the Cleveland School of the Performing Arts, where she had a special emphasis on Vocal Music and Theory. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Jarvis Christian College, Hawkins, TX, and a Master of Divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, IN. Christal holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH. She was ordained a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at Southport Christian Church in Indianapolis in June 1998. She now serves as Regional Minister for Tennessee. She brings a wealth of experience to the conversation on youth ministry and ways to address building and sustaining such a ministry in congregations of all sizes.

Rev. Rob Shrader Rob joined the Beargrass Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) ministerial team in Louisville, KY, in September 2018. He previously served seven years as pastor of Campbellsburg Christian Church in Campbellsburg, KY, and six years as senior pastor of First Christian Church in London, KY. Rob earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Transylvania University, where he majored in psychology and drama. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Lexington Theological Seminary. Rob has served on the board of the Christian Church in Kentucky and has frequently been a keynote speaker, counselor, and music leader at the Disciple Camp Wakon’Da-ho.

Mr. Jeremy Gillett Jeremyis the Director of Youth Programs for First Christian Church North Hollywood, CA, with responsibility for youth programming. Jeremy grew up in two Disciples of Christ churches with active youth ministries but very different youth groups. He attended church camp and travelled as a young person to Puerto Rico to represent the Christian Church in Kentucky. He attended Jarvis Christian College. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Arts in Performance from Arizona State University. He is a member of the Board of Directors for Global Ministries and a member of the LTS inaugural CAAM cohort. He frequently shares the way his various experiences frame some of his current work with youth. 

“I feel strongly that the challenges facing our youth are challenges the church can help to address,” says Lexington Theological Seminary President Dr. Charisse Gillett. “But due to any number of pressing issues and, of course, funding, many churches find themselves unable to mount sustainable youth programs. Each presenter brings a perspective to this conversation that can shed light on what churches can do, what people can do to support youth, and what organizations and educational institutions can do to better support those who become youth ministers.”
