Former Trustee Bettie Jean Hamlin Paulk Passes Away at Age 86

Former Lexington Theological Seminary Trustee Bettie Jean Hamlin Paulk, 86, formerly of West Point, Miss., died Feb. 20 in Dayton, Tenn.

Bettie Jean was the daughter of Rodney and Adele [Carroll] Hamlin. After graduating salutatorian of her high school class in 1949, she married the love of her life, Fred Paulk. Much of her life was spent in search of a great bridge game and in service of her church. Bettie Jean was known as “Mama Bet” to a generation of girls attending conference camp at Roosevelt State Park. She served as the moderator for the Alabama Conference of Churches and was on the Board of Trustees for Lexington Theological Seminary. Bettie Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 42 years; a son, Frederick D. Paulk III; and her sister, Mary Guinn Weathers.

Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at 2 p.m. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Johnny Wray officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her two daughters, Vicki Schafer (Rick), of Flowery Branch, Georgia, and Adele Goodwin (Greg), of Clearwater, Florida; her two sons, Rodney H. Paulk (Becky), of Dayton, Tennessee, and Marc Hopkins, of Clearwater, Florida; six grandchildren, Eric Paulk, Ryan Paulk and Brad Paulk, Betsy Paulk Kowalski, Laurel Schafer, and Jenny Heinz; five great-grandchildren, Anna Paulk, Darby Paulk, Bailey Paulk, Soren Paulk, and Zoe Kowalski; and one sister, Mrs. Mazie Dillard, of Moultrie, Georgia.

Pallbearers will be Belk Weems, Ralph Weems, Hugh Cooper, Mike Weathers, Bucky Kellogg, and Roger Pryor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lexington Theological Seminary, 230 Lexington Green Circle, Suite 300, Lexington, KY 40503 or to First Christian Church, P.O. Box 208, West Point, MS 39773.

Visitation will be Friday 1-2 p.m. at Calvert Funeral Home.
