Getting the Most Out of Reading Your Bible

Presenter:
- Jerry Sumney
- Professor of Biblical Studies at Lexington Theological Seminary

May 17, 2014

  •  In this session we will explore how to understand the Bible in its original setting and how to use what we find to help guide the church today. We will survey the kinds of materials we find in the Bible and discuss how we go about reading that kind of material. We will think about the differences between Gospels and letters (like we have from Paul) and about how those differences influence the ways we read and understand those books. We will also review some tools that can quickly help bring clarity to difficult passages. Since finding a message to the ancient world is not all that the church needs today, we will consider how we use that ancient message in the church today. We are often clear that we are not literalists, but not so sure about what we ARE. So we will look for ways to bring the text to speak to our world in credible and meaningful ways.

Cost: $15 per person on-site participants, $10 per log-in ( no limit for participants)

Lifting Your Congregation from ‘Good to Great’:  Re-Framing Church Growth in the Missional Era

Presenter:
Matt Rosine
- Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation ,

- Minister for Congregational Planning Resources

- Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada
- Indianapolis, Indiana

Saturday, June 7,  1, – 1:30 p.m.—3:30 p.m.

  • The church used to measure success by worship attendance and offering plate income.  While those can be markers of vitality, Jesus had very little say about those things.  He had more to say about our daily practice of faith, our relationship to society’s marginalized and our anxiety in the face of change.  As we turn the corner into this new “missional” era, we need to find new measures for congregational effectiveness.   This webinar will offer rich stories and practical guidance for following Christ’s call to church vitality and community transformation.  Join us for this inspiring and engaging conversation about the questions our churches need to ask in order to move from ‘good to great.
  • Our presenter is Matt Rosine from Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation.   A Disciples of Christ minister, Matt works with congregations across the country to help them see new possibilities for ministry.  He has worked with Hope Partnership since 2008 and prior to that served as a pastor in Texas.  He writes a church leadership blog at www.mattrosine.com.   Learn more about Hope Partnership at www.HopePMT.org.
